Dear Educators,

This is the first in a multi-article series about the priorities of school administrators as they navigate the COVID-19 crisis.

As a school administrator, the burning question on your mind is probably “how can I reassure our parents during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond?” Let us help you assess this question briefly from the perspective of a team of education administrators, management consultants, healthcare specialists, and behavioral psychologists.

During this period of transition, your communities of students and parents are looking up to you as their thought leaders in the steps that must be taken to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. As you develop and execute your strategies for transitioning to digital, take a moment to double click out of the technology bubble to keep stock of the full set of priorities that should be on your mind today. The key for leaders to properly navigate these waters is to manage to not only get the technology and processes right, but the psychology of children and their parents.

The psychological state of your students should be one of your single highest priorities. We conducted a careful review of the literature on childhood education and found that approaches that incorporate psychological factors – such as encouraging growth mindsets, linking classroom work to real-world aspirations, and using online modules that help activate students’ motivation and sense of belonging – can improve student success in high school education. The effects of these initiatives are magnified in the context of COVID-19 and the resulting educational quarantines.

What can you do today? Even as you marshal your resources and personnel to maintain education continuity, begin to think about how to actively strengthen the motivation and positive outlook of your students beyond simply sending periodic communications to update them on measures the school is taking. Children need active support and reinforcement during this turbulent period, and they need concrete measures to ensure that they remain committed to building their futures at a time when much of the world seems like it is standing still.

Thank you, and we look forward to sharing more insight in our next segment.

Best,
